Seven men have been arrested after a shootout between cops and robbers in Leondale, Alberton, police said on Saturday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said the robbers had held staff at a cash and carry in Leondale at gunpoint and then robbed the shop of money.

He said police, along with metro police and security guards, were called to the scene of the armed robbery.

The police confronted fifteen robbers at the scene and a shootout ensued.

During the shootout, one of the robbers was injured in his leg and abdomen.

The other robbers then fled the scene.

Six of these were caught by the police.

“Two of the suspects were arrested after hiding in a dog kennel in the area,” said Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

The injured robber remained in hospital under police guard.

Police seized five illegal firearms from those arrested, as well as money.

The arrested men will appear in court soon on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The search for the other robbers continues. - Sapa
