Johannesburg - The Malaysian plane shot down in eastern Ukraine was a deliberate act carried out to discredit Ukrainian people who resist capitalism, the Workers International Vanguard Party said on Saturday.

“A number of factors point to (the) deliberate shooting down of the jet by imperialist forces in order to discredit not only the Ukrainian resistance, but also the Palestinian resistance and any force that is resisting imperialism capitalism,” the organisation said in a statement.

On Thursday, Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, came down with 298 people onboard in a separatist-held region of Ukraine.

AFP has reported that the aircraft was allegedly shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

The Vanguard party claimed shooting of the plane was also being used to undermine the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

“Front page news are devoted to the passenger jet while the genocide in Gaza is relegated to the side lines by the world imperialist capitalist press.”

AFP reported on Friday that Israel had warned it could broaden a Gaza ground assault aimed at smashing Hamas's network of cross-border tunnels.

This was as Israel stepped up attacks in which more than 260

Palestinians have been killed.

In the face of Israel's land, sea, and air offensive that has sent civilians running for cover, the Islamist movement Hamas remained defiant and warned the Jewish state it would pay for its attacks. - Sapa
