Six people were killed and one was injured in an accident in Germiston at the Geldenhuys interchange on Saturday, said Ekurhuleni Metro Police.

Spokesman for metro police, Kobeli Mokheseng said the crash occurred on the N3 freeway at the M2 split.

“It is not clear what occurred before the accident but preliminary investigations reveal that a blue five-door VW Golf travelling on the N3 towards Durban lost control, hit a steel-barrier and as it rolled a few times, it ejected three occupants before it separated into two pieces,” said Mokheseng.

Five of the deceased were males estimated to be in their 20's and late 30's. A female occupant who was 44-years-old was also killed. Paramedics declared them dead on the scene.

The only survivor of the accident, a 37-year-old male, was rushed to the Natalspruit hospital with serious injuries.

Traffic on the N3 was affected for a few hours.

“A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Germiston police station,” said Mokheseng. - Sapa
