Johannesburg - Six people were killed and nine others injured when a taxi overturned on the N3 highway near Heidelberg in Gauteng, paramedics said on Monday.

The accident occurred late on Sunday night, said Netcare 911spokesman Chris Botha.

“Paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found the crumpled remains of the taxi in the centre median and the roadway obstructed by accident debris,” said Botha.

The six people appeared to have died on impact.

“Three people were in a critical condition and six sustained serious injuries,” Botha said.

All the injured were stabilised on scene. One was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke hospital while the others were transported to various hospitals by ambulance.
