Johannesburg - A 52-year-old man drowned in a stream between Doornkop and Emdeni in Soweto on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.
Police divers found his body one kilometre away from the area from which he went missing on Monday, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.
“He was found dead,” Makhubela said.
The incident stemmed from flooding in the area, where at least five people were rescued from rivers in a rainy Gauteng on Monday, officials said at the time.
Two men and a woman were rescued from a stream in flood in Naledi, Soweto, by local residents, Johannesburg disaster management spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.
The three had been swept away by a strong current as they were trying to cross the river.
Mulaudzi confirmed that most of the streams in the city had increased water levels after the rain of the past three days.
Dozens of roads in Soweto, including Elias Motsoaledi Road, Main Street and Sifuba Street in Dobsonville and Mahalefele Drive in Dube, were closed due to flooding on Monday, officials said.
Low lying bridges were flooded at Kinini Street in Mofolo Central, Vilakazi Street in Mofolo Park, Mila and Armitage Streets in Orlando West, Mlambo Street in Meadowlands Zone Five, and Vundla Street in Moroka.
