Spring gives Gauteng a miss

Johannesburg - Spring has sprung out the window, and Gauteng residents are preparing themselves for a cold weekend. Bad weather has moved into the province, bringing with it rain.

According to the South African Weather Service, the cold snap is being caused by a spring cut-off low system, and not a cold front. A cut-off low is a low-pressure weather system that becomes severed from the westerly flow circulation.

“We can expect scattered showers and thundershowers today with cooler temperatures,” said forecaster Cobus Cronje.

“For tomorrow, we can expect an 80 percent chance of rain… showers and thundershowers will be widespread,” he added.

The persistent rain would continue into Sunday morning.

“We can expect quite a drop in maximum temperatures. We’re looking at mid to upper teen temperatures,” Cronje said.

In the meantime, flooded roads, out-of-order robots and wet weather caused delays on the roads this morning, with a number of accidents.

A crash on Barry Hertzog Road in Milpark left one person seriously injured and two with minor injuries. In an accident on Beyers Naudé Drive, two people were injured after a vehicle lost control. In a third accident, on Grayston Drive and Katherine Road, one person was left with minor injuries after losing control of their vehicle and hitting the barrier.

Part of Joe Slovo Drive was flooded in Doornfontein, causing the road to be closed off and heavy traffic to build up
