Johannesburg - As anti-racism placards lie at the entrance of St John's College, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is locked in a meeting with school officials and parents over the "racist" storm dogging the institution.

Lesufi is visiting the school on Friday morning over "racist" statements made by a geography teacher towards black learners about them only passing due to their close proximity to white learners.

The MEC is against the school's decision to give the teacher a "final written warning" for this statement.

The school established an "independent" investigation over the remarks, where it was found that they were indeed racist.

However, St John's principal Paul Edey reportedly said it would not dismiss the staff member but would rather give him a final warning.

This is what the MEC is against, believing that harsher measures should be applied.

It is understood that Lesufi's meeting with the school is an attempt to try to alter their "final warning" decision.

Earlier on Friday morning, parents of black learners at the school left placards outside the gates of the school before entering the grounds for the meeting expressing anger of what they felt was racism at their children's school.

Lesufi is expected to brief the media after the meeting.
