Johannesburg - Protesting students on Tuesday morning forced their way onto the Witwatersrand University’s Medical School premises in Parktown as lectures remained suspended.
Some jumped over the locked gates and marched up to the stairs inside the premises. One student carried a placard that read: “You can jail a revolutionary, but you cannot jail a revolution. Stay strong UCT”.
After occupying the medical school premises, the singing students vowed to occupy various premises at the university, including the nearby education campus.
The protests against fees hikes have spread to other universities around the country.
On Monday night several protesting students were arrested at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
There were more arrests on Tuesday morning for contravening a court interdict preventing students from protesting and blockading the institution’s entrances.
There was no police present at the Wits Medical School.
