Pretoria - A violent confrontation has broken out between police and protesting students at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
Police have thrown a few stun grenades at the students, but these failed to disperse the crowd.
The students, meanwhile, have set tyres and portable toilets on fire and pulled down a fence.
Police used water cannon to douse the fires lit , a Reuters witness said.
Students at tertiary institutions across South Africa have been protesting against the proposed fee hikes for 2016.
Inside the Union Building President Jacob Zuma was engaged in a high-level meeting with university vice-chancellors and representatives of student formations.
Zuma is expected to address students later on Friday.
Earlier Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene promised students that Zuma would come and address them, as tempers continue to rise.
“We are trying to find and amicable solution, and please, stay calm. The president will come out and address you,” Nene said.
