Johannesburg - The water supplied to the Temba and Hammanskraal areas is safe for consumption, the City of Tshwane said on Wednesday.

It met the required standards and had no microbial contamination, spokesman Selby Bokaba said.

Tests were conducted at all supply reservoirs and water network pipelines in the region, following suspicion of water contamination after several people reportedly suffered from diarrhoea on Tuesday.

Tests were also conducted at 10 of the 27 stands of the people who complained of diarrhoea.

The municipality issued a cautionary statement on Tuesday afternoon about possible diarrhoea in Hammanskraal and Temba.

Bokaba said the city's health services division sent water samples to an independent laboratory for verification and confirmation of the results. It upheld the test results from the city's laboratory.

“The City of Tshwane recently received a blue drop score of 95 percent - which implies that the city is capable of sustaining a safe quality of water supply and will act responsibly when deviations in the tap water quality are detected... ,” he said.
