Johannesburg - Two men and a woman were rescued from a stream in Naledi, Soweto, on Monday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

The three were swept away by a strong current as they were trying to cross the river, spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

They were rescued by residents who were passing by the river.

Mulaudzi said Johannesburg disaster management officials had confirmed that most of the streams in the city had increased water levels after the rain of the past three days.

He advised residents to stay away from the streams to avoid drownings.
