An average 13.8 percent increase for municipal services will be implemented by the Tshwane Metro Council from Friday.
The increases will only reflect on the new municipal accounts and are payable from the end of July.
Households in Kungwini (Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding) will pay an average 1.2 percent, and those in Nokeng tsa Taemane (Rayton and Cullinan areas) will pay an average 17.8 percent more on their municipal accounts.
These areas were incorporated into Tshwane after the local government elections on May 18.
Electricity will go up by 19.8 percent for residential households, water and sanitation by 8 percent, property rates by 8 percent and waste removal by 17 percent.
Executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has said before that the council’s approach to the tariff regime was a bold one, “one that might not be popular with certain sections of our city, but which, when everything is considered, is necessary and unavoidable”.
Ramokgopa had said at the tabling of the council’s medium-term revenue and expenditure framework for the 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial years that the expanded municipality faced the challenge of three different tariff structures for property rates, electricity, refuse removal, water and sanitation.
To ensure financial sustainability of the municipality and greater compliance with the Municipal Property Rates Act, a single tariff structure was essential. - Pretoria News
