Johannesburg - Two people were killed in Jeppestown on Sunday after their house caught fire, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.

“The two were burnt beyond recognition inside the house when they succumbed to smoke inhalation,” said spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

He said the cause of the fire was unknown.

In another incident, 50 shacks in Denver were destroyed after one caught fire around 1.30am on Sunday. No one was injured.

“We also want to advise the community members in both informal and formal areas to look after their heating and lighting appliances as they try to warm themselves this winter, as most of these fires are caused by heaters, candles and paraffin stoves,” said Mulaudzi.
