Johannesburg - At least two people died when a light aircraft crashed at Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg on Monday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann confirmed two deaths but could not provide further information.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said passengers on the plane had died but could not immediately confirm the number.

He said there were 21 passengers on the plane.

"The number of fatalities are not yet confirmed at the moment but we are trying to get that information," he said.

"We don't know if it [the aircraft] was taking off or landing."

He said the aircraft apparently burst into flames after the crash.

ER24's official twitter account said the aircraft was a Beechcraft 19. - Sapa
