Johannesburg - The family of kidnapped South African lensman Shiraaz Mohamed has released a statement thanking the country for their support.

Mohamed was kidnapped last week Tuesday by unidentified gunmen near a hospital that is operated by aid group Gift of the Givers.

He was singled out from the convoy he was travelling in, and told that he would be taken in for questioning regarding a ‘misunderstanding’.

Mohamed is in the country with the aid group in order to document the lives of Syrian people and raise awareness about the challenges facing the people in the war torn country.

The statement reads: “The family would like to thank fellow South Africans for their support and understanding, as well as the media for their ongoing coverage since Shiraaz was captured. However, the family asks that their privacy be respected in this very trying and emotional time”.

Mohamed’s ex-wife and close friend of the family Shirley Brijlal added that the wait to see Mohamed home was taking its toll on her.

“What do we say every time someone asks how we are doing? We are paralysed with worry and concern for Shiraaz. All we can do is hold on to our Creator and know that His will is being done to bring Shiraaz safely back to us."

Brijlal said it becomes more and more devastating as the hours fly past.

"It's becoming scarier. His mum and sisters will not be attending the vigil. They send their heartfelt gratitude and hope this vigil and the public support will add momentum to the efforts being made to find Shiraaz. You all remain in our prayers as a family."

Brijlal thanked Gift of the Givers, the South African government, and the ordinary citizens of Syria for their ongoing efforts and support.

Meanwhile the Lenasia South community will be holding a night vigil at the civic centre from 19:30 this evening in honour of Shiraaz and to pray for his safe return.
