Following the mysterious shooting that took place at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus on Wednesday, the university has said the 24-year-old female who shot herself in the stomach was not a UP student.

“The University of Pretoria can confirm a tragic incident on its Hatfield Campus where a 24-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach. The woman is neither a staff member nor a registered student of UP,” the institution said.

The university said it was giving its full support to the police in their investigation and were also supporting and assisting the woman’s family in every way possible. It has emerged that 24-year-old Chantelle Stockel was a registered law student at the institution in 2011.

The university, in line with the family’s request, would give no further details. The Netcare Montana Hospital on Thursday refused to confirm if Stockel had undergone surgery. The hospital’s Christina Moutinho said: “What I can confirm is that we have a female patient in a ward and she is in a stable condition but I cannot confirm if it is the person you are inquiring about.”

According to information from police, Stockel took her father’s gun and went to the university where she shot herself. Police spokeswoman Captain Pinky Tsinyane said they were investigating a charge of negligent handling and discharge of a firearm.

She said they were also still trying to establish how she managed to get hold of the gun. “We would like to encourage the community to stick to the Firearms Control Act and to keep them safely locked away for their own safety,” said Tsinyane.
