Two employees of the Department of Home Affairs were granted bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court following their arrest for allegedly obtaining cash from foreign nationals, police said on Wednesday.

The two, and two accomplices, were arrested on Tuesday, following a tip-off from people who had paid money to obtain South African identity documents.

"The two fraudulently obtained cash from foreigners and promised to get them identity documents," said Sergeant Sanku Tsunke.

Their alleged operations were based at the Market Street regional branch and were carried out from a bottle store.

The four, out on R2000 bail each, are charged for possession of suspected stolen documents and for theft under false pretence.

Investigations are continuing. - Sapa
