Johannesburg – As many as 23 children were injured Tuesday morning when the minibus taxi they were travelling in crashed into a ditch off Longacres Road in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu Natal.

Paramedics found the taxi in a ditch on the side of the road. "Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered that ... 23 children, aged between five and nine, had been injured. Assessments showed that the injuries ranged from minor to moderate," said ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring.

He said the injured children were treated and taken to various hospitals in the area.

"The driver later told paramedics that the brakes had apparently failed, causing him to lose control of the taxi and crash into the ditch," said Meiring.

Local authorities are investigating.
