KwaZulu-Natal - Several ANC heavyweights visited Inanda Dam on Tuesday to pay their respects to MK leader Nduduzo “Sticks” Mdletshe who is thought to have drowned at the weekend.

The party’s national chairwoman, Baleka Mbete, provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala, eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo, KwaZulu-Natal Tourism MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu and Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said they wanted to “see for themselves” where the drama unfolded on Sunday and to support the Mdletshe family.

Mdletshe was in the news last year when he lay across the road to President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home to stop DA leader Helen Zille from visiting the homestead.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon said a police search and rescue team, a police dog and helicopter had been involved in the search but there was still no sign of Mdletshe.

A missing person’s docket has been opened and the police said an inquest docket would be opened if Mdletshe’s body was found.

Meanwhile, the NSRI recovered the body of a 22-year-old man at St Lucia beach on Tuesday after witnesses saw him swept out to sea at the weekend.

Last Wednesday, the body of 21-year-old Tutu Zondi of Amanzimtoti was recovered on a beach in the Eastern Cape after he drowned while swimming with friends.

On December 3, Nhlakanipho Ngwazi, 15, was swept away in the Umgeni River and drowned and, on December 8, a man in his forties drowned at Richards Bay when he and a 20-year-old woman attempted to swim to Pelican Island. - The Mercury
