A call has been made to the public to support World Food Day by making a donation to a fund that could potentially save the lives of hungry people.
Almost 11 million South Africans, or 20 percent, do not know where their next meal will come from. The non-profit company FoodBank SA has created a national food banking network to address this.
Patrick Andries, general manager of FoodBank, said: “There’s no quicker or easier way to help those in need. Fighting hunger is also an extremely effective way to reduce crime, unemployment, ill health and poor education.”
FoodBank relies on food donated by many of the country’s leading food manufacturers and retailers Much of this, which would otherwise have been wasted, is sorted and donated to community-based organisations.
To mark World Food Day on Sunday, 16 October, FoodBank is encouraging the public to give up the cost of a meal by donating R20 to help feed hungry people.
By simply SMSing the word “Foodbank” to 40421, the public will make a R20 donation, which will allow FoodBank to feed 12 hungry people.
The dedicated SMS line will be active until January 31 next year.
