Johannesburg - The remains of 10 people killed during political violence in Bergville will be reburied, the KwaZulu-Natal government said on Thursday.

“KwaZulu-Natal premier Mr Senzo Mchunu and member of his cabinet will pay the final respects to the victims of the 1993/4 political violence in Bergville, when 10 of those killed during that period will be buried this weekend,” spokesman Ndabezinhle Sibiya said in a statement.

The area around Bergville was at the centre of political violence which erupted between the African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party in the 1990s.

Due to the violence it was impossible for funerals of the victims to be held in their home towns, KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu said in the statement.

He said the 10 were buried near Ladysmith. The National Prosecuting Authority's missing persons unit exhumed their remains. They would be reburied in Bergville on Saturday. - Sapa
