Bleak weekend on KZN roads

Durban – While the eThekwini municipality launched its road safety campaign, at least four people were killed and more than 20 injured in road accidents in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.

On Friday, the eThekwini municipality launched its Ngizoba Road Safe Education Campaign which the city said was aimed at encouraging road users to “make road safety a priority this festive season”.

On the same night, two teenagers and two adults were injured in a head on collision on Old Richmond Road, in Kwandengezi according to ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing Harduth.

Also on Friday night, Mathe said, at least five people were hurt when a taxi overturned on the R61 in Port Edward.

On Friday morning, a man was seriously injured when a truck carrying cars overturned on the N3 North, near Peacevale.

“One of the vehicles flew through the air and landed on another vehicle that was travelling towards Pietermaritzburg,” Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said.

On Saturday, Bodasing Harduth said a man was killed when he lost control of his vehicle in Cato Ridge on Saturday night.

“It is understood that the vehicle went off a bridge and plunged several metres down before rolling and landing on train tracks close to Alice Goswell Road,” Bodasing Harduth said.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, sustained multiple injuries.

Also on Saturday night, she said, one person died and another was injured after a bakkie crashed into a tree crash on the R103 between Colenso and Escort.

On Saturday afternoon, a man and a young girl were injured after a vehicle overturned on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg, near Richmond Road, Netcare 911’s Athlenda Mathe said.

And on Saturday morning, Bodasing Harduth said, a woman believed to be in her twenties died after she was knocked by a car on Clermont Road, in Clermont in Durban.

“It is understood that the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit the woman and crashed into a gate,” she said.

Also on Saturday morning nine people were injured and one killed after a bakkie rolled on the P278, outside Dalton.
