Durban - A boy is missing after he was swept out to sea at Margate on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

“NSRI joined the SA Police Service, Police Search and Rescue and Tower 13 lifeguards searching for a nine-year-old male child swept out to sea believed to be after getting caught in rip-currents while swimming and playing in shallow water on the beach,” said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.

“It is believed that the child is from Parys, Free State, and had been at the beach with his mother and a child minder.”

An extensive search for the boy had not yielded any results, Lambinon said.

Police are investigating the incident.
