Durban - A Durban schoolboy who was hailed a hero received a bravery award on Saturday for saving a woman from drowning after her car was submerged in water during Monday’s floods.
Lifesaving South Africa bestowed the award upon Cameron White, 17, at the Riverside Hotel after the story of him saving Shakila Singh, went viral on social media.
Singh, who was on her way to pick up her daughter, found herself in a difficult situation when her car got stuck under the M4 in La Lucia. She lost control of the vehicle as it began floating and was eventually submerged in water.
She says White was her “guardian angel” who came to her rescue and saved her.
“If it was not for him, I would not be here today. We are having a traditional thanks-giving ceremony at a temple on Monday to thank God for everything that has happened and for sending Cameron to my rescue,” said Singh.
Cameron has been a lifesaver at the Durban Lifesaving Club since he was 11. He was overwhelmed on Saturday when he received the award. Since his act of bravery became public, he has become an online sensation.
Meanwhile, a Durban North woman who went missing during the floods has still not been found. The search for Brenda Scriven, 62, went into day six on Saturday with no sign of her. It is believed Scriven was swept away after her vehicle broke down.
In a separate incident, Chatsworth woman Priscilla Pillay, 48, was found dead on Tuesday covered in debris. She was swept away from her car when a river broke its banks on Monday.
