Durban - It was business as usual at the Durban branch of Teazers on Friday, despite the fact that Sars has frozen the assets of Lolly Jackson, the deceased owner of the strip-club franchise.

According to Shaun Russouw, the owner of the Durban branch in Springfield Park, the taxman had yet to contact them regarding shutting down the venue because it is registered as a different company.

“We have not been contacted by anyone. The Durban club has nothing to do with Lolly Jackson and his estate because I own it. The only thing that has to do with them is the building itself. So we are in limbo right now,” said Russouw.

The building has been the centre of controversy for some time. Russouw lost an initial court case with Jackson’s widow Demi earlier last year and was instructed to leave the premises. The matter is on appeal at the Provincial High Court in Pietermaritzburg and Russouw said he was not willing to leave without being compensated.

“My main concern is that I get paid because Demi owes me R3-million. If I am going to leave the premises someone has got to pay me.”

On Friday evening, patrons were slowly trickling into the venue. One of the club managers said that they weren’t really worried about Sars closing down their operation. “As you can see there are people coming in and we’re still getting our normal loyal crowd. We have heard about the clubs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but we aren’t worried,” said the manager.

Meanwhile, Kashiefa Ajam and Wendyl Martin report that Lolly Jackson hated Sars – almost to the point of his own financial annihilation.

This is the introduction of chapter nine of the book Lolly Jackson: When Fantasy Becomes Reality written by the strip doyen’s former right-hand man Sean Newman and Peter Piegl and Karyn Maughn.

“It has never been a secret the contempt with which Lolly dealt with Sars and it seems that relationship has now come full circle. To be honest it was always my view that his death would come about from a heart attack induced by the rage he displayed at the mere mention of the name Sars.”

Newman was commenting after Thursday’s announcement by Sars after the Pretoria High Court order granted at the end of last month that Cloete Murray, of Sechaba Trust (Pty) Ltd, and Zeenath Kajee, of Westrust (Pty) Ltd, be appointed joint legal guardians of Jackson’s assets. These include several Teazers clubs around South Africa.

The assets are to be preserved to help foot an outstanding tax bill of about R100-million.
