A family are counting their blessings after they narrowly escaped injury on Saturday night when a bakkie crashed into a bedroom wall of their home in the Pietermaritzburg suburb of Eastwood.
Home owner Dudley Diedricks said he got the fright of his life when he heard screeching tyres and a loud crash against the bedroom wall of his house.
Diedricks went outside to find a vehicle had crashed down an embankment and into the bedroom wall just as the family were preparing for bed.
Diedricks’s two young grandchildren were in the bedroom when the accident happened at 10pm.
Nicole Diedricks, mother of four-month-old Aston, said the family were still shaken.
This was not the first time a vehicle had crashed down the embankment on Tarantaal Road, she said.
“In the past two years there have been about six crashes,” all into neighbouring houses, she said.
Attempts to get the municipality to erect speed bumps on the road had been futile, the family claimed.
Werner Vermaak, of ER24, said paramedics had found three women, believed to be in their 20s, and a man inside the vehicle.
The women had suffered multiple cuts and bruises and were taken to hospital for treatment, he said. - The Mercury
