Durban - The death toll in a fire that swept through a house in Chatsworth on Friday morning has risen to seven, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said.

“Sadly at this stage the remains of another two people have been found in the house, which increases the death toll from (five)... to seven souls,” spokesman Robert McKenzie said.

The fire engulfed the Erica Road home earlier but was brought under control by firefighters.

The cause of the fire was unknown and an investigation by authorities had begun, said McKenzie.

African National Congress provincial spokesman Bongani Tembe said it was believed a gas cylinder exploded in the house around 4am.

This could not be confirmed by authorities.

“We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims,” said Tembe.

“We call on our comrades in the area, government, and neighbours to lend a helping hand to the friends and relatives of the deceased.”
