Durban - Warnings to debt-ridden consumers to spend wisely over the festive period have fallen on deaf ears, say Durban debt counsellors who are seeing at least three clients a day and taking innumerable phone calls from people who are financially overextended.

Glenwood debt counsellor Anthea Rhode at the Mzansi Debt Clinic said in the first two weeks of the year there was a flood of people needing help.

“Most who are coming in now overindulged in December and are in trouble. They were using credit and thought they could worry about the problem (of paying) later.”

A debt counsellor at Durban Debt Counselling Services, who did not want to be named, blamed the problem on reckless lending and dishonest consumers.
