Durban - They

have had ups and downs like many couples, but for Clarence and Evelyn Dent – who celebrated their diamond anniversary on Thursday – life has been a sparkle.

Clarence, 84, and Evelyn, 79, of Bellair, Durban, said their 60 years together have been truly memorable.

“There have been so many special moments. Every day has been a special moment,” said Evelyn. “The gel that keeps us together is always knowing that when we made our vows it was not only in front of friends and family, but also before God.”

The couple, who have three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, had their epic marriage blessed at the Oldfields Chapel in Bellair and spent the rest of the day enjoying tea and cake with friends.

“It has been a laugh… and we have had our ups and downs, but we made (it) this far,” Evelyn said.

She said they had seen hard times, but because they lived by the motto, “we eat to live and don’t live to eat”, they were content.

Evelyn’s most memorable moment since tying the knot in 1952 was the birth of their last child at their home in 1960.

“My husband took that little bundle of joy that he had met for the first time into the lounge and he slept with him that night,” she said.

The couple’s daughter, Sandy Freeman, said she and her husband, Christopher, had come from England to share the day with her parents because they had been an inspiration to her.

“Their love is truly an inspiration to me.” - Daily News
