Tropical Cyclone Giovanna, which has killed 16 people and left thousands homeless in Madagascar, posed no threat to the KwaZulu-Natal coast, the SA Weather Service said on Thursday.

Durban forecaster Lucky Makhwedza said the cyclone was moving south-east of Madagascar and away from the SA coast.

“KZN in general will not be affected. The patterns of the cyclone have changed; it is moving away from the coastline into the sea,” he said.

Makhwedza said temperatures in the province were likely to remain as they had been during the week, but there was a possibility of rain in Durban over the weekend.

The category-four cyclone hit Madagascar on Tuesday and is said to have destroyed over 3 300 homes and 38 schools.

Several people were still missing and over 65 people were being treated for injuries.

Winds during the peak of the storm exceeded 200km/h, causing damage to electrical lines and other infrastructure.

The UN and aid agencies said they were preparing to deliver relief. - The Mercury
