Durban - Most Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric candidates greeted parents and teachers anxiously waiting outside exam halls on Thursday with shrieks, smiles, hugs and tears of relief.

“Phew, it’s over,” laughed Durban’s Dylan Samuels, who wrote math at St Henry’s Marist College in Glenwood.

“That’s all I can say,” he said as he hugged and high-fived his friends. “It’s over, it’s over.”

Tammy Peters-Newman, also at St Henry’s, rushed up to her mother, the anxiety of six weeks of study on her face.

“I am just so happy, so very happy,” she smiled tearfully.

Pauline Rousseau, the head of Maris Stella on Durban’s Berea, said that the exams had ended without hitches.

“The girls have coped well, and we have not had any complaints about the papers. We believe they were fair,” she said.

Anne Oberholzer, the chief executive of the IEB, said this year’s exams had gone very smoothly.

“We have refined our systems. People know what they are supposed to do and there haven’t been any major curriculum changes for a few years.”

At least 1 000 markers appointed in August were ready to get to work. The IEB results will be published on December 29. - The Mercury
