Durban - A bus carrying school children has overturned on the N2 to Harding in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services said on Monday.

The bus was carrying 34 children who managed to get out of the wreckage and were found sitting on the side of the road around 3pm, said spokesman Robert McKenzie.

They sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

The bus driver and 29 of the children were taken to Port Shepstone hospital.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the bus was lying on its side, obstructing the highway.

Police said the 29-year-old bus driver was arrested for drunken driving as well as reckless and negligent driving.

The children were from various schools in the area.
