Durban - Durban Transport commuters had to make other transport arrangements on Monday as the bus strike continued into its fifth day.

This was confirmed to the Daily News by a member of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu).

The man said the municipality, Satawu and Tansnat would meet at the Durban central bus depot on Monday morning.

The strike - the second this year - is believed to be over a pay dispute.

In a statement on Friday, the municipality urged commuters to make alternative arrangements.

It said plans were in place for an entity to operate the bus service.

It was supposed to be in operation at the beginning of this month, but this had not happened.

The municipality said the new MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison had asked for time to look into the matter.

The city has also received a letter from National Treasury requesting more information on the planned municipal entity.

These were some of the reasons given by the municipality for not meeting the deadline, but it insisted it was not going back on its promise.

“The municipality is engaging with the operator and employee union representatives to reaffirm our commitment to the process,” the statement said.

Work stoppages are nothing new at the bus service. Drivers were not paid in December and did not receive bonuses. In protest, they blockaded roads with buses.

Last year, commuters were left stranded when bus depots ran out of fuel.\
