Durban - The Durban University of Technology has suspended its academic programme until Wednesday, the university announced on Monday night.
The suspension of the academic programme follows a day of protest led by the DUT SRC across all five Durban campuses and the Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg.
DUT SRC President Zama Mncube had vowed earlier on Monday, that the students would pursue a complete shutdown of the institution before an urgent meeting was to be held with management, NSFAS chief executive Msulwa Daca and Department of Higher Education officials.
Mncube said 4 000 students who qualified for NSFAS funding had still not been funded and were not afforded accommodation by the institution.
The SRC said their protests were also part of the calls for fee-free and decolonised education.
DUT deputy vice chancellor for operations, Professor Theo Andrew said in a statement that lectures, practicals and academic activity would resume on Wednesday.
“This will include the closure of the libraries. However, all staff are required to report for duty at the university,” he said.
