Richards Bay – A light aircraft landed safely on the beach at Richards Bay on Saturday after its propeller apparently fell off, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

NRSI Richards Bay deputy station commander Mike Patterson said duty crew were activated at 11.16am following reports of an aeroplane on the beach at Richards Bay, following an emergency landing.

The SA Police Service and uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Services also responded, he said in a statement.

“NSRI Richards Bay responded and while responding to the scene reports were received that no one was injured in the incident.

“On our arrival on scene we found a light aircraft that had successfully landed on the beach following an emergency landing with a local couple on board who were not injured and they required no assistance. It appears that the propeller of the single engine light aircraft fell off during flight,” he said.

The Civil Aviation Authority had been alerted.
