Engineers to face Tongaat mall probeComment on this story
Durban - The role of engineers in the Tongaat mall collapse will come under scrutiny when the commission investigating the collapse resumes on Wednesday, the KwaZulu-Natal labour department said.
“As the inquiry edges closer to a decisive moment, the spotlight will now fall on engineers and their role in regard to techniques, design, and construction methods applied during the project,” spokesman Nhlanhla Khumalo said in a statement on Monday.
Two people were killed and 29 injured when a section of the mall, which was under construction, collapsed on November 19 last year.
The department's occupational health and safety manager Phumudzo Maphaha was appointed to lead the commission investigating the collapse.
The commission is expected to prepare a report of its findings and formulate recommendations to be presented to the labour minister and National Prosecuting Authority for consideration.
