Two people were killed and one was injured by falling metal gates on Friday, said paramedics.

A security guard died when he was crushed by a falling gate at a factory in the Phoenix Industrial Park in Durban on Friday night, said Netcare911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks.

He was apparently opening the 300kg sliding gate when it left its track and fell on him. He was declared dead at the scene.

On Friday morning, a 32-year-old man was crushed to death when he was caught between an electric gate and a wall on a plot in Benoni, on the East Rand, said ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

His family called paramedics at 5.15am. They tried to save his life, but he died on the scene, she said.

A 57-year-old man was seriously injured when the 300kg gate he was standing next to fell off its rails and on top of him on Friday afternoon, said ER24 spokesman Andre Visser.

“The man had sustained a serious injury to his left leg as well as suspected back and neck injuries,” he said.

He was treated at the scene and placed on spinal immobilisation equipment before being taken to hospital. -Sapa
