Durban - Four people were injured in a gas explosion in a temple on Friday in Phoenix, north of Durban, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said two people were in a critical condition while two others sustained serious burns.

Botha said the four were cooking inside the temple on Longcroft Drive when the explosion happened at 11.38am.

When paramedics and the fire department arrived on the scene they found the injured on the ground outside the temple.

The patients were transported to a hospital in Umhlanga for treatment. - Sapa
