Inanda, Durban -

Four school children were killed and scores were injured when their bus plunged down a cliff in Inanda, Durban, on Friday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said four pupils were killed, 14 were critically injured, 17 were seriously injured, and 30

suffered minor injuries.

Botha said ropes were used to pull the injured up to the road. They were taken to nearby hospitals.

The Red Cross's Air Mercy helicopter airlifted some of the injured.

Botha said it was believed the children were from Umzinto, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, and had been attending a sporting event in Inanda.

The reason for the bus driver veering off the road was not known. He was believed to be among those critically injured.

The eThekwini metro police, fire brigade, and the provincial ambulance service were on the scene. - Sapa
