Durban - A Tuberculosis patient who was turned away from a clinic last week has finally been admitted to hospital.

Phindile Zulu, 29, was turned away from the Sundumbili Clinic and told to go back home while health officials arranged for her to be transferred to King Dinuzulu Hospital in Durban.

There was apparently no space for her at the clinic when she sought help last Wednesday.

Zulu’s sister, Mabongi, said her sister was admitted to the Stanger Provincial Hospital on Friday.

“She is doing much better now,” she said. “We are hopeful that her condition will get better now, because they were not helping us before. After we spoke to the media, they were berating my sister and asking her why she went to the media, but she had to do something to fight for her life.

“How can you ask someone in such a severe condition to go back home and wait for a bed there?

“How can they do that?”

Zulu could not be reached for comment on her cellphone on Monday, but Mabongi said she wanted to thank the media for helping them get help.

She said any nurse who berated her about talking to the media was focusing on the wrong thing.

“I told her to take down the names of any nurse who continues to talk nonsense about us going to the media. The nurses must focus on their jobs; if we go to the media, that is none of their business,” Mabongi said.
