'It was too late to run'

IOL news jan 24 ND TRUCK CRASH (Read-Only)

.

A truck sped out of control and veered into the parking area at Pietermaritzburgs Liberty Midlands Mall last night. A woman was hit by the truck and died at the scene.

A Pietermariztburg businesswoman was crushed to death by a runaway truck outside the Liberty Midlands Mall, on Monday night.

Alice Jogessar, 70, of Mountain Rise, had just finished dinner with her visiting Egyptian friend Reen Mohamed and was walking to her car when the truck ploughed into her.

Midlands police spokeswoman, Joey Jeevan, said the driver of the truck and a passenger escaped with minor injuries. She said several other bystanders were also injured in the crash.

A case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

Netcare spokesman, Chris Botha, said reports from the scene indicated the driver of the eight-ton truck had lost control of the vehicle while driving on the N3 Durban-bound lane.

It veered through the parking lot of the mall, damaging several vehicles in the process.

Botha said the woman died at the scene.

Jogessar’s distraught sister, Rosy, said the family was shocked at the sudden tragedy.

“Reen is a student in London and was in the country to do research for her studies. She had known my sister for many years. She was due to return home tomorrow and they decided to go out for dinner,” Rosy said.

“According to her, she was seated in the car and Alice was about to get in, when they saw the truck approaching. She screamed for Alice to run but it was too late. The truck also hit her hired car and it spun around on impact.

“Reen is shattered by what has happened.”

Rosy said Jogessar’s funeral service would only take place once her daughter arrived from London.

The N3 in the area around the mall is under heavy construction and Pietermaritzburg residents have complained that trucks travelling in that vicinity of the highway pose a real danger because of reckless drivers.

Angie Powell, who witnessed the accident, said the truck was speeding.

“To come that far off the highway and crash into the mall, the truck must have been travelling at a high speed.

“It was like something out of a movie. All I remember seeing was this huge metal thing hurtling towards us and then we started running.

“It was terrifying,” she said. - Daily News

I place the blame with traffic Police what checks are done on these heavies on our roads? NIL!! travel between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and any driver will agree that these heavies have no respect for other traffic on our roads they cut one off. I have witnessed traffic officers not taking any notice of these heavy offenders. So much for KZN Zero tolerance on our roads. They will only do some thing once something happens or someone gets killed. Condolemces to the family of the the lady who was murdered by another reckless truck driver. This will never end as long as there is ZERO TOLERANCE on our raods wake up traffice police

Just yesterday we had miraculously avoided a accident when a truck came into our lane when there was nowhere to go. The cars behind us started to break but the cars in left hand lane did not notice that we had nowhere to go. In all this the trucked continued to drive into our lane. I am not sure how but e missed landing under the truck within inches. We had just picked up my daughter in Howick and we could have all died because of negligence. Super Link registration 0XW8IN EC - but what is the point in complaining because nothing gets done.

I was born and lived in PMB for many, many years and if I'm right, this is at the bottom of that very dangerous tract of road where truck divers are advised to switch into low gear. How fast can one travel in low gear without doing some damage to the engine? I understand the Liberty Mall is situated in the old Bird Sanctuary.

I live and work in the Midlands and travel to PMB every weekend. I know how these truck drivers drive on our roads. Not only the N3 but the R103 as well. It's very hard to not immediately believe it's driver negligence. I've seen too many accidents and near accidents caused by them, even overturned trucks making travelling between Estcourt and PMB a nightmare!

In general, the truckers between Jhb and Durban have little respect for the law, and even less for other road users. While the cops are hiding behind bushes with camoflauge cameras waiting to pounce on a modern vehicle travelling at 135kph, the truckers are breaking just about every other law on the road including dangerous overtaking, disregard of solid lines, ascending and descending hills in lanes designated with minimum speed limits, NO TAILIGHTS is a favourite! If the cops did a bit of travelling to catch moving violations, then the real dangers on the road may be curtailed. Oh yes, but then they cant sleep on the job, that would mean they would have to work! Vultures!

As usual everybody jumps to the same conclusion without knowing the facts. And if you know anything about physics one can understand how something like this can happen or how it was possible for the truck to come to rest where it did after leaving the road even if it was travelling at 60kmh.

This is so shocking. My condolences to the family, and also to Reen, who was so traumatised by this tragedy. A speeding truck is a lethal weapon. Why was the truck going so fast? Did the brakes fail? In any case, the driver will face serious charges, and he is also no doubt traumatised and probably injured.Trying to control a runaway truck on a fast downhill is an absolute nightmare.

I'm glad the story is reporting reckless driving as the cause of danger. Angie Powell should be a little more deive of what she constitutes "speeding". A truck travelling at 80kmh can easily result in this kind of accident and would appear to be travelling fast, although legally not "speeding". I suspect she means the driver was driving recklessly.

Narrow mids @1:50: If the truck was in 1st gear AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE no brake failure or any other breakge for that matter could have led to the severity of the accident. Be real: this is a case of DRIVER ERROR exceeding the speed limit in a construction area, not in the stipulated gear; what more do you want??

The driver wasis negligent, this vehicle went through a metal rod fence and plowed through 4 parked cars before going through the wall, I estimate the distance from the fence to the wall to be at least 500m, there is no excuse for this.

The reality is that the speed limit on the N3 near the mall is 60kmh due to road works. One can only imagine the attitude of the scumbag driver to be travelling at that speed.

This is so sad for the woman's family. THis driver is a silly idiot. The distance is too farlong from the N3 to go that far into the mall. The only explanation is speed. He must be severely punished. Such a reckless & negligent act which has cost a life now.

I am sure you guys that are already blaming the driver, did take into consideration that the mall is located at the base of a steep hill before making your comments. I am sure you guys also considered that the brakes may have failed coming down that steep hill, before your'll made those comments.

Brendan I have to agree with you. The driver of this truck must have been flying. The distance of the Liberty Mall from the N3 is some distance. Even coming down off Town Hill he would have to going at some speed to get to the site of impact.
