Pietermaritzburg - A jogger was killed in an accident on Saturday morning when a driver lost control of his vehicle and hit him.

Paramedics said that 60-year-old Neil Robinson was jogging with his partner, Lynn-Rae van den Berg, at around 8am in Alexandra Road in Pietermaritzburg, when the tragedy occurred.

The couple were training for the Maritzburg Marathon, when the driver of a Hyundai Getz lost control of his vehicle and the car struck Robinson.

“Van den Berg managed to jump out of the way in time. Unfortunately the car struck the man and he died on the scene,” said ER24 paramedic spokesman, Werner Vermaak.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be in his early 20s, sustained serious injuries. He was taken to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg where he is in a stable condition.

A case of culpable homicide and reckless driving is being investigated.

Van den Berg is said to have been hysterical on the scene and was treated for shock.

Robinson is survived by his partner Van den Berg and two children from his first marriage.
