Durban - A robber shot a Ladysmith man in his home on New Year’s Eve before making off with cellphones and jewellery.

Homeowner, Tony Cunningham, was shot twice, in the stomach and his left arm.

Two men attacked the businessman at his Reebok Street home after gaining entry through the back door.

Mark Pitout of SecureSA said Cunningham and his wife were awoken by barking dogs at about 5.30am and later the alarm went off.

On his way to investigate, Cunningham came face to face with the intruders. SecureSA is a non-profit organisation which disseminates crime information to the community and other members of the group. One robber pointed a 9mm pistol at Cunningham, the other was armed with a knife.

As Cunningham retreated to his room, the men demanded money and guns from him.

“Mr Cunningham had no money kept in the house and he doesn’t own a firearm. One suspect shot him twice before stealing cellphones and some jewellery,” Pitout said.

He said NN Alarms was quick to get to the scene and was later joined by police. The suspects were spotted running up Hyde Road but they disappeared into bush.

He also said community members should take responsibility for their own safety.

In a case where dogs barked and the alarm went off, Pitout said people should remain in a safe room in their house and wait for assistance.
