KZNs social development MEC Weziwe Thusi, has committed 48 percent of her R2.1 billion budget to assist agencies.

KwaZulu-Natal will spend more than R2 billion on social development, with non-profit organisations (NPOs) receiving on average six percent more in government funding, social development MEC Weziwe Thusi said on Wednesday.

Presenting the province’s 2012/13 social development budget of R2.047bn to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, he said the department would embark on a compliance audit to ensure NPOs spent their allocations the way they were intended.

In the 2011/12 financial year, Thusi’s department distributed R731 million. She said this would increase by six percent on average.

The bulk of her budget would be spent on child care and protection services. The running of her department was expected to cost R394m.

Care for the aged was expected to cost R107.6bn, and R102.2m had been set aside for those suffering from HIV/Aids. - Sapa
