Durban - A boy was killed and his sister was injured when they were struck by lightning in Richmond, the KwaZulu-Natal co-operative governance department said on Wednesday.

Ayanda Mbeje, nine, died at home after he was struck during a thunderstorm on Sunday afternoon, spokesman Vernon Mchunu said.

His sister Ayanda Mbeje was recovering in Edendale Hospital, in Pietermaritzburg.

Forty-two houses were damaged in the storm. Six of them were completely destroyed.

Co-operative governance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube visited the residents on Wednesday.

Mchunu said temporary shelter had been provided for the homeless and that food parcels had been handed out.

A lightning conductor was erected near a local school and the Mbeje's home.
