Three farmers were killed by lightning in Passenham Farm near Gingindlovu on Tuesday night, the KwaZulu-Natal co-operative governance and traditional affairs department said.

“Emmanuel Mansango, 33, Lungile Nyawo, 28, and Khanyisile Mthembu, 40, were standing in a veranda when they were hit by lightning,” spokesman Vernon Mchunu said on Wednesday.

Seven other workers were also hit and are recovering in a nearby eShowe Hospital.

Mchunu said 195 people have been killed this year as a result of disaster related incidents.

“I am depressed deeply to have to face the victims of these disasters and even the thought that we can expect more dark stories like these is saddening,” MEC Nomusa Dube said.

She said because of climate change there would be an increase in disaster related incidents. – Sapa
