Malema praises Mbeki

In a surprise move, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has heaped praise on former president Thabo Mbeki, saying he was one of the best cadres produced by the ANC.

Addressing a youth league provincial general council meeting in Polokwane on Saturday, Malema praised Mbeki saying he was one of the best cadres “we produced as the movement of the ANC’’. Malema praised Mbeki’s intellect and for making it possible for the ANC to get a two-thirds majority in elections.

Malema, who played a part in Mbeki’s removal from power, said the former president had made two mistakes: he had been intolerant of others’ views and had pursued a third term as ANC president.

“Other than that, president Mbeki was one of the best cadres we produced as the movement of the ANC. We must never be jealous of President Mbeki; that man is intelligent, that man is (gifted),” he said.

In an indirect attack on ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, who blamed Malema for chasing away white voters from the ANC, he said whites hated Mbeki passionately because they saw him as Africanist. “Even when they did not vote for president Mbeki, we got a two-thirds majority under him without their vote, so what are you talking about?”

Malema denied that his fiery speeches had cost the ANC the votes of whites in the local government elections and also denied calling whites criminals.

Meanwhile a fist fight broke out inside the Durban city hall on Saturday as ANC Youth League members debated who would be elected league president on June 24. Two members opened cases of assault against each other on Sunday.

The fight, during the league’s provincial general council, was believed to be caused by divisions over which of Malema, the incumbent president, and Gauteng youth league leader Lebogang Maile should be elected leader.

Although the league in KwaZulu-Natal pledged its support for Malema, some members wanted the province to back Maile.

Sifiso Mngadi said he had opened an assault case after being attacked for displaying a poster reading “Bring back the culture of respect into our beloved movement”.

“The party is being looked at as a very arrogant and disrespectful organisation. I was raising the issue of discipline among leaders.”

He had also asked the league to discuss the issue of nationalisation, which the league wants accepted as ANC policy, but it was clear that the league’s leader wanted to impose this on its members.

Other members, who would not be named for fear of being victimised, said Malema was turning the party into a Zanu-PF.

“There is no democracy. We have been told that if we vote for Maile, we will not see the national congress,” said one.

According to the declaration statement from the weekend meeting, the KZN ANCYL will support Malema for re-election as president and he will lead the league into the ANC’s national conference in 2012.

Mngadi said many people wanted to vote for Maile, but were afraid to voice their preferences.

Xolile Dlamini said the KZN ANCYL leadership had chased them out of the council for nominating Maile as a candidate.

“Some of us want Maile and other people for the executive committee, but we were told we are not going to see the national congress if we do not agree with the rest. We view this as intimidation.”

He said people were tired of Malema’s racists comments.

While the council was still in progress, some disgruntled youth league members, who said they had been chased out of the meeting, were seen outside the city hall with posters reading “We are a silenced majority inside” and “Bring back the culture of respect into our beloved movement of Anton Lembede”.

League provincial chairman Mthandeni Dlungwane said he was surprised that people claimed to have been beaten. He was later seen at Durban Central police station, where two youth league members had been taken by the police.

Police Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said two members of the party had opened common assault cases against each other. - The Mercury

How do we corerect the wrong with the wrong? IOL readers, let us not preach respect, responsibility, acountability, interlect, freedom, patriotism if we still post coments like these. We ourselves use offensive words and disrespect, what do we want the world and our youth to learn from us. All that you are saying here will happen to you one day as it is happening to Zuma and others, we will pay for our sins of being disrespectful to others.

"South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is in the favour of the majority who has complete political control. The fact that the political majority requires affirmative action to protect them against a 9% minority group is testament to a complete failure on their part to build their own wealth making structures, such that their only solution is to take it from others." A few of you dont understand that there has to be an opposition in a Democracy. The opposition is there to make sure there is no Dictatorship. Have you noticed that when the ANC government get it right the opposition praise them? All enlightened people, no matter what colour they are realise that there has to be "checks and balances" in any country. Its no good bringing race into the argument, it makes the debate very heated, its unecessary to say ugly things about each others race.

If it is true that the "whites" have all the money, then that is how the "people" are able to get money from the government. If the "blacks" had all the money how many people would they help. When ever there is a catastophy, its the whites who are the first to hold out their hands and help. Stop being so pig headed you whiners, its no use hitting the piggy bank on the head because you will eventually break it and then there will be no more.

Most people really misunderstand Julius & his militancy..ANCLY are the kingmakers in the ANC, but their take is that they are on a learning curve, so they don't have to be diplomatic in saying things! It is not correct to say that 90% fear the 10% minority in implementing policies like AA, EE to bring parity, it is the realisation that if you leave this to its own devices, it will never correct itself. I'm sorry for "Graham F" for lacking class divisions of society without necessarily race, but the fact in this case is that whites were favoured for a long time and afforded opportunities to "create that wealth" on the back of poor, exploited majority, it's not because of being clever! And "Skromrox" shame, you're so ignorant about corruption if you think it is ANC, Malema and Zuma leading it, it is all over the world and they try and hide it, at least Zuma acknowledges that there's corruption that has to be defeated, your Apartheid bosses never even wanted it known or mentioned, you could hang for saying it! "mRs Kiwi" one would understand your problem and you think that Moeletsi Mbeki is the best, cos he talks as "arm-chair critic", let him in govt, you will see mistakes, but its bad when he speaks as a white person...as you tell us! Wena.."blackpower" saying "since Zuma took over, even black people are heading down-under (Australia), you're dreaming and you have a nightmare - how do you think that poor people can even think of emigrating, it is only the elite, privileged and those who have benefitted from our democracy who now talks of leaving SA - wake up, it cant be the majority! We are not leaving our country, no matter what, we were born here and will die here. People must stop trying to divide ANC leaders be it Mandela, Thabo Mbeki or Zuma...they are all ANC leaders and follow ANC policies, not as individuals and Madiba always said that he acts in a collective leadership! STOP glorifying others and demonising others.

@ Mord Morris... I suppose you are automatically refering to the 9% of the population as being white? What you may not know is that the government owns 30 % of the land and the government is ANC, so your statement that 9% percent of the popultaion owns 90% of the land is wrong. @Hilton you say that the 10% of the population has 90% of the riches and this is because of a 200 year headstart. This is true, most of the lands riches were from the industrialisation of South Africa when Europeans came here and kicked off the diamond and gold mining industries in the 1880's. The local population could have had a headstart on developing this industry for thousands of years prior to this, had they had the technical ability and the knowhow which they didnt. Even today with such deals as Aurora they still cant manage a mine when it is almost given to them. AA and BEE although comendable in its aim of righting the wrongs of the past will never truely work as it puts the incompetent in important positions and gives wealth to the few greedy politically connected individuals. So it is a simple fact of life, the strongest and the cleverist will always climb to the top on the backs of the weakest and the dumbest. AA and BEE is like taking a fourth division side and saying its so unfair that they are never in the premiership so waht we are going to do is ask the top Premiership teams to lose some games for a while so that the poor 4th division sides can also have a taste of the glory. Its sadly called competition, its in human nature so you will have to leanrn to live with it.

What ANC supporters dont realise is that there is no quick way to money unless you win the lottery. Ok say the ANCYL take away all the wealth from the whites, they spend it and then what who are they going to get the money from next???? These very people will have no jobs just like the people of Zimbabwe who are now living in SA!! There is one solution and one solution only and its never going to happen over night. Instead of the ANC stealing all the money, money needs to be spent on services for the poor and education needs to be at the top of the list. Investing money in the youth is the only answer. There also needs to be a big change in culture black people in particular need to realise that they cant have big families any more. Zuma is a poor example of this, how if you have 10 wives and loads of children are you going to afford to give your children the best start in life??? ie the best education plus having such a large family how as a father are you going to be a role model for your children when you have so many. The world has moved on and without a culture change things will never change!!! Note this has nothing to do with race people so before you jumping up and down I am no racist so dont even go there!!!

Julie you are spot on, Tbos is a true leader and is infortune that one can not compare the two presidents, is chalk and cheese, one would have undermine Tbos so much if you compare with JZ, just compare the dilemma of Searra Leone and Libya,I think Tbos would have come up with a best solution there is.A world stateman that the Nato would have listen to him, Let us face the truth whether we like or not JZ is below par and what I find frustrating why ANC does not you Tbos, he is their own child and development, I will repeat his own words that history will judge.

@Penny Hickman, what a poor quote to put forward. Please put forward a more intellectual argument against AA. You see you can't have 10% of the population have 90% of the countries riches, this after they got a 200 year head start. I'm sorry my dear but you got this one horribly wrong. The London Times know bugger all of SA's real problems and they (the Brits) are part of the reason why AA is needed to change the way the South African economic landscape looks. Stop living in a bubble and smell the coffee.
