Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu has called on all road users in the province to be vigilant and unite in the fight against road crashes and fatalities.
“We are determined to reduce road carnage through increased disciplinary law enforcement roadblocks and police visibility,” he said in a statement.
He was speaking after the deaths of four people in a car crash in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday night.
ER24 paramedics said the people died when an Audi collided with a dump truck near the intersection of Durban and Alexander roads.
Spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said the driver of the car apparently lost control of the car, which then side-swiped the truck, overturned, and rolled for about 50 metres. It came to a halt when it crashed into a bus stop.
Jackson said a man was partially trapped in the wreckage, two were flung out of the car, and a fourth was trapped underneath a fence behind the bus stop.
The truck driver lost control of his vehicle, crashed through a wall at a block of flats, and came to rest against a tree.
