Durban - KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu has raised concerns over the increasing number of deaths on the province's roads.

Five people were killed on Monday in an accident on the Old Richmond Road, at KwaNdengezi, outside Mariannhill.

Two people died when their car caught fire after the crash and three more people died on the scene.

Two others were taken to hospital in critical condition.

“It is deeply disconcerting and painful to lose people in these accidents, more so because we are losing the lives of young people on whom our future depends,” said Mchunu.

Government would recommit to being more visible and take harsher measures to prevent such accidents.

“We will also strengthen our road safety campaign and welcome partnerships that will assist in encouraging good behaviour on the roads.”

Mchunu sent condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the accident and wished a speedy recovery to those in hospital.
