The affordable education loan option
Durban - The National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union on Monday called for the head of the KwaZulu-Natal health department to be dismissed.
At a press conference in Durban, Nehawu secretary general Zola Saphetha said the union would hold a protest march and make the department “ungovernable” if Dr Sibongile Zungu was not removed.
“We call upon the MEC for health to immediately remove the head of the department, because under her leadership the department has operated in conflict with the law and failed to produce an effective and efficient healthcare system.”
He said members of the union would march to the Durban City Hall on Thursday to hand over a memorandum to KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.
Sapetha said issues that had led to the union demanding Zungu's dismissal included the department's failure to fill vacant posts, its failure to spend its allocated budget, as well as properly establish various consultative bodies as required by the National Health Act.
The department's failure to fill posts meant that it was operating with only two or three doctors per 100,000 people.
Its failure to fill vital posts meant that it had been forced to return R1.4 billion to the Treasury in the 2010/11 financial year.
He said that if Dhlomo failed to heed the call for Zungu's dismissal, the union would take its protest to KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize. - Sapa
